چکیده

Introduction: Cycloidal crack patterns on Europa are influenced by tidal stress [1]. A wellrecognized portion of the tidal stress is associated with Europa’s orbital eccentricity, which in turn is driven by the Laplace orbital resonance. Their shapes record the location of their formation, as well as the conditions for crack formation. Hoppa et al. modeled several cycloid chains [2]. Hurford et al. [3,4] improved Hoppa’s cycloid model and reexamined the same southern hemisphere cycloids. They found that model fits to observed cycloids are improved when stress from about 0.5 of nonsynchronous rotation is included [3,4].

Rotational Dynamics of Europa

The rotational state of Europa is only rather poorly constrained at present. It is known to rotate about an axis that is nearly perpendicular to the orbit plane, at a rate that is nearly constant and approximates the mean orbital rate. Small departures from a constant rotation rate and oscillations of the rotation axis both lead to stresses that may influence the location and orientation of sur...

Constraints on Europa’s rotational dynamics from modeling of tidally-driven fractures

Cycloids, arcuate features observed on Europa’s surface, have been interpreted as tensile cracks that form in response to diurnal tidal stress caused by Europa’s orbital eccentricity. Stress from non-synchronous rotation may also contribute to tidal stress, and its influence on cycloid shapes has been investigated as well. Obliquity, fast precession, and physical libration would contribute to t...

Strike-slip fault patterns on Europa: Obliquity or polar wander?

Variations in diurnal tidal stress due to Europa’s eccentric orbit have been considered as the driver of strike-slip motion along pre-existing faults, but obliquity and physical libration have not been taken into account. The first objective of this work is to examine the effects of obliquity on the predicted global pattern of fault slip directions based on a tidal-tectonic formation model. Our...

Convective–conductive transitions and sensitivity of a convecting ice shell to perturbations in heat flux and tidal-heating rate: Implications for Europa

We investigate the response of conductive and convective ice shells on Europa to variations of heat flux and interior tidal-heating rate. We present numerical simulations of convection in Europa’s ice shell with Newtonian, temperature-dependent viscosity and tidal heating. Modest variations in the heat flux supplied to the base of a convective ice shell, F , can cause large variations of the ic...

Searching for Evidence of Active Tectonics on Europa

Introduction: Voyager and Galileo showed that the surface of Europa has undergone significant reworking at some point during the moon’s history. The surface is covered in lineaments, which likely formed from the tides generated from Europa’s eccentric orbit around Jupiter [1]. There is also a relative paucity of visible impact craters, suggesting a surface age of about 80 million years [2]. The...
